2024: Japan provides support for green school in Nuwakot, Nepal

Japan has provided grant assistance to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to support the development of a school meal programme in Nuwakot, Nepal.

The support has been given to reconstruct earthquake-affected schools in the region, while providing more focus on the learning environment from a nutritional perspective, by providing better school infrastructure and  equipping the government to provide better school meals.

WFP country director Jill Bradford at the time thanked Japan, saying the programme has the potential to improve the lives of more than 2 hundred thousand people. She said:

“By investing in school meals, we give children an incentive to go to school and keep learning. It also helps them stay healthy and nourished, and be better prepared for their future.”

One school in Nuwakot has implemented clean cooking solutions by rehabilitating the kitchens and installing solar power systems.

Robert Kasca, Representative & Country Director at WFPsaid the green kitchen concept “brings in green energy through implementing a solar power system. This brings in green and cheap energy which will replace the gas and wood stoves that were used before for cooking school meals. It also prevents deforestation in Nepal as the firewood will not be used any longer.”

He went on to describe the additional money-saving benefit which is helping the school save for much-needed new dining hall.
